Law Society Defends Defendants' Choice
Government Trying to Stop Defendants Selecting Their Own SolicitorLaw Society Press Release9 October 2006
The Law Society is demanding that the government drop contentious
plans that would deny defendants the right to choose their own
solicitor. In a recently published consultation paper, the
government proposes that judges should decide if there is a
potential conflict when several defendants are represented by the
same solicitor in serious criminal cases. Judges would also be
able to remove solicitors who they think are too busy to represent
defendants.
