'Glass Ceiling’ Breakthrough For ILEX Members

ILEX Press Release
21 August 2007
The ‘glass ceiling’ that prevented some categories of lawyers from becoming District Judges, Deputy District Judges and Tribunal Chairmen will finally be shattered as the new Tribunal Courts and Enforcement Act comes into force later in the year.

Part II of the Act, which was introduced into parliament following the Queen’s speech last November and received Royal Assent at the end of July, aims to open up the eligibility and application criteria for the judiciary to a wider pool of talented lawyers. This Act provides an excellent opportunity to reduce the perceived exclusivity attributed to judicial appointments, and will help to build public confidence that judicial panels understand and are representative of today’s society.
